The "Leona, Queen of the Mountain" drawing was completed in 2022 by artist Cherie L. Smittle featuring a sugar skull mountain lion.
While driving to her cabin in the Arapahoe National Forest the artist saw a Mountain Lion making her way across the road. This inspired Leona, Queen of the Mountain. She wanted to create a different design from all the other mountain lion art and came up with the idea of doing it in a Sugar Skull or Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos).
As she did it in a Spanish style she learned Leona is Spanish for Lioness. Since the Lion is considered the King of the Jungle, a Mountain Lion could be considered the Queen of the Mountain (and it is perfect because she has a crown).
